Joan Peeters
Born in Santpoort, Holland
Lives & works in Barrydale, South Africa
The artist works and lives in Barrydale in the Klein Karroo. She has received a BAFA degree from Michaelis UCT in 1980 and later an MA in Fine Art at Atlier 63 in Holland in 1982. She lived in Holland for the next 8 years developing her painting skills in one of Amsterdams leading ateliers. Since 2002 she has had 7 solo shows and today her works hangs private collections around the world.
Joan has gained the reputation for her ethereal, post modern realist painting of the Karoo landscape. Her art work reflects muted, subtle colours which reveal the nature and the character of the terrain that is often a dry wilderness yet always richly textured.
Although nature is used as the subject matter, Her art work is not limited to landscapes only. Joan uses the landscape as a stage in which objects are placed or events are unfolded. They become places of reverence.
Although her work expresses all the elements employed by a traditional landscape artist, they also oscillate between clear realism and abstraction.
The volume used to create the composition can either become fractured and float on the surface of the canvas, or become part of the whole.
Her art works have an emotional element that embodies the desert like qualities of the landscapes which she lives in daily.
Other works are also displayed in London, Washington UCT and the New Knowledge Library.
